12 civilians killed in rebel attack in Central African Republic

UN peacekeepers sent to area to ensure protection of civilians, says UN official

KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) – Rebels in the Central African Republic killed 12 civilians and wounded 15 others in an attack on an army base and surrounding neighborhood in the country’s northwest, a UN spokesman said Wednesday.

Monday’s attack, which took place in a village in Lim-Pende prefecture, was attributed to members of the Return, Reclamation, Rehabilitation (3R) armed group, said Stephane Dujarric.

Citing a report of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic, Dujarric said the wounded are receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

Noting that many people had fled the area of the attack, he said the peacekeepers were preparing to send members there to help ensure the protection of civilians.

UN peacekeepers have been deployed in the country since 2014.

In mid-October, President Faustin-Archange Touadera declared a unilateral cease-fire in fighting against armed groups in order to pave the way for dialogue.

On Sunday, two Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group, a private military contractor, were killed in an ambush in the northwest of the country.

The mercenaries, based in the sub-prefecture of Koui, had reportedly attacked a position of the 3R rebels, killing one and wounding another. But on their return, 3 kilometers from the village of Mbae-Mbere, they fell into an ambush set by the rebels, local sources said.

The central African nation has been devastated by violence since former President Francois Bozize was ousted in 2013.
