15 killed amid ongoing Baghdad violence

BAGHDAD (AA) – At least 15 people were killed -- and dozens injured -- in separate bombings that shook Iraqi capital Baghdad on Monday, according to local police officials.

Police Lieutenant Hatem al-Jabri told Anadolu Agency that a suicide bomber had blown himself near a parking garage in the New Baghdad area east of the capital.

The attack, al-Jabri said, had left two people dead -- along with the bomber -- and 13 others injured.

Another three people were killed -- and another seven injured -- when a bomb went off in Baghdad’s northern Sabi al-Bour district, al-Jabri added.

And in the city’s northwestern Al-Hurriyyah district, yet another person was killed by an explosive device that had been planted in his vehicle, according to the police officer.

Earlier the same day, a suicide bomber killed seven people in Baghdad’s southern majority-Shia Amil district.

Ihsan Radi, a local health official, told Anadolu Agency that the bomber had detonated his explosive vest near a crowded marketplace.

"Seven people were killed and another 15 injured in the attack," Radi told Anadolu Agency.

No group has claimed responsibility for Monday’s spate of bombings, but the Iraqi authorities typically blame such attacks on the Daesh terrorist group.

Iraq’s security situation has deteriorated dramatically since mid-2014, when Daesh overran the northern city of Mosul before capturing additional territory in both Iraq and neighboring Syria.

Last month, more than 1,000 people were killed in separate acts of violence across the troubled country, according to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
