KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) – At least 18 people died Monday in Punjab province after consuming toxic liquor during Christmas celebration, according to authorities.
The deaths were reported in the Tobatek Singh district where more than two dozen Christians, mostly youngsters, consumed the liquor.
Seven people were transported to the hospital in unconscious condition and two wine sellers were also among the deceased, police chief Atif Imran told reporters.
Hundreds of deaths are reported annually in rural Pakistan from the consumption of low quality wine.
Sellers use chemicals to increase the potency of the liquor which often results in casualties.
Local media blame police for turning a blind eye to the illegal sale of liquor after receiving bribes.
