ISLAMABAD (AA) - Two people were killed and 11 injured on Friday when supporters of a political party clashed with police during a protest against alleged tampering with election results in a constituency in northwestern Pakistan.

Violent protests were reported in Shangla district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where a large number of people supporting Syed Fareen, an independent candidate backed by the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan, took to the streets after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared Ameer Muqam the winner of the general elections on Thursday.

Muqam is a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz who has served as a minister in previous governments.

Two supporters of Fareen were killed and five others injured in clashes with police, who attempted to disperse them, a local police official told Anadolu over the phone. Six police officers were also injured in the clashes, he added.

"They were demanding the cancellation of the notification that declared candidate Ameer Muqam the winner of the parliament seat - NA 11," said the police officer, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. "Protesters set fire to an official vehicle and clash with police," he said.

Pakistan held general elections on Thursday to elect a new parliament and four provincial assemblies.

The final results have yet to be announced.

There were also reports of rigging allegations in other places, with candidates claiming that polling officers were not releasing the final results.
