Police say cause of incident was old dispute between two factions of local political group

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) - Two people have been shot dead at an election camp in Bangladesh’s southeastern hilly region of Khagrachhari on Monday, police said.

Khandker Golam Faruq, deputy inspector general of police in the region, told Anadolu Agency initial findings suggest the cause of the incident was an old dispute between two factions of a local political group -- United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) and UPDF-Ganatantrik (Democratic).

Nurul Alam, in-charge of a local police station, told Anadolu Agency the attack took place in broad daylight on an election camp of Natun Kumar Chakma, a member of UPDF and independent candidate for the upcoming general elections.

The UPDF has accused UPDF-Ganatantrik of carrying out the gun attack, reported BD News 24, a local news portal.

The two factions frequently fight each other to establish regional supremacy.

In Aug. 18, seven people, including UPDF-backed student front president, were shot dead by unknown assailants.
