2 soldiers martyred in PKK attack in southeast Turkey

BATMAN, Turkey (AA) - Two soldiers were martyred Saturday when their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in the southeastern province of Batman, a security official said.

The device exploded as they passed through Sason district, the official said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media.

In an attack in the eastern province of Tunceli late Friday, a soldier was martyred and two wounded during a counter-terrorism operation, the provincial governor’s office said in a statement.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU -- resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015. Since then, more than 1,200 Turkish security personnel and civilians have lost their lives.
