MEXICO CITY (AA) – At least 29 people were killed Tuesday when an explosion occurred at a fireworks market in a suburb of Mexico City, authorities said.

Mexico state Gov. Eruviel Avila said 26 victims were killed at the scene while three others died at the hospital.

Police said 60 others were injured the blast that occurred around 3 p.m. local time (2100GMT) at the San Pablito fireworks market in Tultepec.

A video on social networks showed sparkling fireworks, fire and heavy smoke coming from the market. Explosions could be heard in the background.

Firefighters, soldiers and police have been deployed to the area and the Red Cross said 25 ambulances had been dispatched.

Local residents have been told to avoid the area and keep roads clear.

“It is a priority to treat the injured. Later, Mexican civil protection will give details of what happened,” Avila said, adding that funeral expenses will be borne by the state’s government and the state attorney would conduct an investigation.

President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Twitter: ‘’The government of Mexico works in coordination with the Government of the State of Mexico to take care of the wounded and affected people in Tultepec.’’
