Authorities halt operations at manganese mine due to lack of safety measures

By James Kunda

LUSAKA, Zambia (AA) – Three miners were killed after a manganese mine collapsed in Zambia's northern region, officials said.

Victor Mwape, 21, Matthews Mambwe, 25, and Peter Phiri died carrying out illegal mining of the metal, while eight others escaped unhurt, local police officer Michael Chama said in a statement.

The mine caved in as the victims dug deeper into the pit, he added.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the site, Chifunabuli District Commissioner Adam Banda said mining and buying operations at the site would be halted until safety measures were put in place.

The Southern African nation is among the continent's richest base metal habitats but has been grappling with illegal mining practices, especially by many unemployed youths scouting for a livelihood.

The government has since moved to promote the creation of small-scale and artisanal mining cooperatives to legalize the process of exploring mineral-rich hotspots and secure the lives of those interested in tapping into the sector.
