Saudi authorities blame Yemen's Houthi group for cross-border fire

By Ahmed al-Masri

RIYADH (AA) – Three Saudis were wounded late Monday by military shells fired from war-torn Yemen into southwestern Saudi Arabia, according to the kingdom’s civil defense agency.

Agency spokesman Yahya al-Qahtani said military projectiles struck Tawal province in the southwestern Jizan region from Yemeni territories, the official SPA news agency reported.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but Saudi authorities often point the finger at Yemen’s Shia Houthi group, which overran the capital Sanaa and other provinces in 2014.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia formed an Arab coalition to launch an air campaign aimed at reversing Houthi gains and supporting Yemen’s Saudi-backed government.

Two rounds of UN-backed peace talks have failed to resolve the raging conflict, in which thousands of Yemenis are believed to have been killed and an estimated 2.5 million forced to flee their homes.
