4 Bahrainis sentenced to death for 2017 terror attack
Rights groups accuse Manama of using death penalty as weapon against political opponents
MANAMA (AA) - A Bahraini court on Monday sentenced four people to death in connection with a terrorist attack that took place in June 2017.
Ahmed al-Hammadi, head of the Bahraini police’s criminal division, was quoted by Bahrain’s official news agency as saying the four had been convicted earlier for “having links to the terrorist bombing that took place in Manama’s Al-Daraz district" last year.
That attack resulted in the death of a policeman and the injury of a number of other people.
Monday's sentence is still subject to appeal before Bahrain’s Court of Appeals.
Manama frequently faces criticism by rights groups for the relatively high number of executions carried out by the state each year.
Several such organizations have accused the Bahraini regime of using the death penalty as a weapon against its political opponents.
