6 hurt in alleged Palestinian attack in central Israel

JERUSALEM (AA) - Six Israelis were injured Thursday evening in a gun-and-knife attack carried out by a Palestinian youth in the Israeli city of Petah Tikva, according to Israeli police.

"Five Israelis sustained light to moderate injuries after a Palestinian man opened fire in a crowded market," a police statement read.

"Another man was slightly injured after being stabbed," the statement added.

Police said the attacker was an 18-year-old Palestinian man from a village near the West Bank city of Nablus.

According to police, the assailant fled the scene of the attack before being captured by Israeli civilians.

More than 265 Palestinians have been killed since an uptick in Israeli-Palestinian violence began in late 2015, according to Palestinian figures.

Israel, for its part, says 46 Israelis have been killed over the same period in attacks carried out by Palestinians.
