Sniper, bomb blasts target residential neighborhood, market place, police checkpoint

By Arif Yusuf

BAGHDAD (AA) – Six victims were killed Monday, including one police officer, and 20 injured in bomb and sniper attacks in Baghdad, according to Iraq's interior ministry.

In the northern town of At-Tarmiyah, an unidentified sniper targeted a police checkpoint, killing the officer and injuring two other officers.

Five civilians were killed in separate bomb attacks that targeted a market place in the Sabaa al-Bour, a residential area in Al-Shuala and a sports center in al-Durah. A total of 18 civilians were injured in those attacks.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since mid-2014, when Daesh captured the northern city of Mosul and overran large swathes of territory in the northern and western parts of the country.

According to the UN, more than 3.4 million residents are now displaced in Iraq -- more than half of them children -- while more than 10 million are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.
