6 killed in suicide attack on Afghan military academy

KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) - A single suicide bomber killed at least six people in an attack on a military academy in the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday, an official confirmed.

Firdaus Faramarz, spokesman for the Afghan National Police in Kabul, told Anadolu Agency that a single suicide bomber detonated the explosives at one of the primary check posts of the Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul.

He confirmed six people were killed and six others wounded in the attack.

The spokesman said the attacker attempted to enter the military academy to cause much greater damage, but the security guards identified him.

The attacker exploded the bomb when cadets were preparing to leave for a weekly holiday in the afternoon, the local Azadi Radio reported.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Located in the southern outskirts of the capital city, the targeted university has been the site for a number of similar attacks on multiple occasions in the past.

In one such major attack on Oct. 21, 2017, some 15 cadets were killed when the bus they were traveling in was targeted in a suicide bombing.
