7.2 magnitude earthquake rattles Fiji

So far, there have been no reports of casualties or damage due to earthquake that hit Houma, Tonga at depth of 167 kilometers

ISTANBUL (AA) – A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale jolted Fiji, an archipelago nation of more than 300 islands in the South Pacific, on Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake struck at a depth of 167 kilometers (about 103 miles), it added.

The quake hit southwest of Houma, Tonga, and "occurred due to normal faulting at an intermediate depth within subducted Pacific lithosphere, approximately 170 km beneath the Pacific Ocean," the US agency said.

So far, there have been no reports of casualties or damage due to the earthquake.
