7 injured in New Zealand Chinese restaurant attack

ANKARA (AA) - A senior Chinese official in Auckland confirmed Tuesday the arrest of a Chinese national by New Zealand after an axe attack injured several people at a Chinese restaurant.

The Chinese Consulate General said at least seven Chinese were injured in the north shore of Auckland attack late Monday but no victims have life-threatening injuries, according to Global Times, citing a statement.

A young male with an axe attacked the restaurant and was later arrested.

New Zealand media reported earlier that three people were wounded in the attack.

"We acknowledge how frightening this incident was for those involved, and for the wider community, and we are ensuring there is support in place for both the victims and their friends and family," Radio News Zealand quoted Police Commander Inspector Stefan Sagar.
