Africa records over 95,000 coronavirus cases

Deaths tally at 2,997, according to Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AA) – The number of COVID-19 patients in Africa has reached 95,201, said the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday.

According to the latest data, the death toll in the continent tallied at 2,997 while 38,075 people recovered.

North Africa recorded 30,100 virus cases, West 26,200, Southern Africa 19,400, East 10,100 and Central Africa 9,400.

Like the number of infections, North Africa even has the highest fatalities, 1,500; West 554, Southern Africa 359, Central Africa 304 and East Africa 284.

Similarly, 13,000 patients recovered in North Africa, while West saw 10,100 recoveries, Southern Africa 9,400, East 3,000, and Central Africa 2,600.

South Africa has the highest number of cases in the continent that tallied at 18,000 while Egypt in North Africa recorded 14,200, Algeria 7,500, Morocco 7,100, and Tunisia 1,000.

But in terms of the death toll, Egypt suffered 680, more than twice as much as the figure for South Africa that is 339.

Nigeria has the most virus-linked deaths in West Africa, 200, followed by Niger 58, Mali 55, Burkina Faso 52, Sierra Leone 34, Ghana 31, Senegal 30, Cote d’Ivoire 29, Liberia 23, Guinea 18 and Togo 12, with the rest suffering less than 10 deaths.

In East Africa, Sudan suffered 121 fatalities, Somalia 61, Kenya 50, Tanzania 21, Mauritius 10, and the rest having less than ten.

Fatalities in Cameroon in Central Africa number 140, DRC 61, Chad 57, and Republic of the Congo 15, Gabon 12, and Sao Tome and Principe 11.
