AK Party wants 'crystal clear' results of Istanbul poll

Extraordinary objection to results of mayoral elections in Istanbul to be submitted, spokesman says

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party wants “crystal clear” results of Istanbul elections, the party spokesman said on Wednesday.

“The result isn’t crystal clear in terms of Istanbul elections. For this reason, extraordinary objection will be submitted,” Omer Celik told reporters at the party headquarters in Ankara.

On Tuesday, AK Party also said it would seek a do-over for recent local elections in Istanbul.

The party would submit an "extraordinary objection" to the result of the mayoral poll, which may culminate in voters going back to the polls in the country’s most populous city, said Ali Ihsan Yavuz, AK Party’s deputy chairman.

Celik also called on the ones who accused AK Party of “pressuring the Supreme Election Council (YSK)” to apologize from the party.

“None of the ways we have applied are invented today. They aren’t the ways we produce by our own,” he said.

Millions of Turkish voters cast their votes nationwide on March 31 in local elections to choose Turkey’s mayors, city council members, mukhtars (neighborhood officials), and members of elder councils for the next five years.

According to unofficial results in the Istanbul mayoral race, before any recounts, Ekrem Imamoglu, the candidate of main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), leads with 48.79% of the vote, ahead of the AK Party’s Binali Yildirim with 48.51%.

Contesting the results, the AK Party has asked for a recount, saying the recount might change the results.

Celik also said the ruling party will hold its 28th Consultation and Assessment Meeting on April 26-28 in Ankara’s Kizilcahamam district.
