MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) - Al-Shabaab militants attacked a military camp 30 kilometres (20 miles) northwest of capital Mogadishu on Friday, a police officer confirmed.
Local media reported that two soldiers were killed while six others were injured in the attack.
The attack in Afgoye town in Lower Shabelle region hit a security checkpoint outside the camp and the car was unable to enter the compound, said Col. Abdirahman, a regional police commander.
He did not confirm any casualties, but said a security operation in the area is underway.
The troops stationed at the camp are being trained by the United Arab Emirates.
Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Somali army, alongside the African Union peacekeeping troops, has been battling Al-Shabaab militants, which still control rural areas in southern Somalia and often attack military and civilian targets in the country.
