Alcaraz registers straight win over Cobolli to cruise into 2nd round at French Open

ISTANBUL (AA) - Carlos Alcaraz defeated Flavio Cobolli in straight sets Monday to qualify for the second round of the French Open.

Alcaraz, world No.1, eliminated Cobolli, ranked 159 in men's singles, with sets of 6-0, 6-2 and 7-5 at Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

Jannik Sinner and Frances Tiafoe moved to the next round after both beating their opponents 3-0 in Paris.

Zhang Zhizhen meanwhile became the first Chinese man in 86 years to win a match at the French Open.

The 26-year-old’s opponent, Dusan Lajovic from Serbia, stopped playing due to an injury in the second set while trailing 6-1, 4-1.

No. 10-ranked Petra Kvitova and No.11 ranked Veronika Kudermetova were eliminated from the women's singles event after suffering 2-0 against Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova respectively.

In addition, Caroline Garcia, Beatriz Haddad Maia and the 2017 winner, Jelena Ostapenko, advanced to the second round.

The 2023 French Open kicked off on Sunday and will run through June 11.
