Daily briefing on coronavirus pandemic, Turkey, other developments

ANKARA (AA) - Anadolu Agency is here with a rundown of the latest developments in Turkey, around the world and the coronavirus pandemic.

Turkey has administered more than 92.7 million coronavirus vaccine doses since launching a mass immunization campaign in January, according to official figures.

More than 47.67 million people have received their first dose, while over 36.5 million are fully vaccinated, said the Health Ministry.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey and Montenegro, where he paid an official visit, agreed to elevate the trade volume to $250 million.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan in a telephone call, said the Turkish Foreign Ministry. Cavusoglu had a similar call with Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto.

Cavusoglu also attended the Baghdad Cooperation and Partnership Conference and said terror groups, including the PKK, its Syrian branch, YPG, and Daesh/ISIS, threaten regional security. “Turkey will never accept PKK’s presence in Iraq,” he added.

In the scope of its war on terror, Turkey neutralized at least three PKK terrorists in northern Iraq. Four PKK terrorists surrendered to security forces.

Speaking at a welcoming ceremony in the capital of Ankara for troops arriving from Afghanistan, Turkish National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said risks, threats and developments in Afghanistan are being closely monitored and Turkey has taken necessary initiatives and measures for all scenarios.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Red Crescent distributed food packages to 100 families in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

Turkey rescued 70 asylum seekers in the Aegean Sea after they were illegally pushed back by Greek authorities into Turkish territorial waters, according to the Turkish Coast Guard Command.

Africa saw 33,385 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, according to the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.


- Developments across World

The Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership, which aims to promote cooperation and partnership in the Mideast, convened in the Iraqi capital. Participants, which included Turkey, reiterated support to the Iraqi people and government and stressed concerted efforts to ensure regional stability.

US President Joe Biden warned that another attack around the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul within 24 to 36 hours is “highly likely” with the countdown looming for a US withdrawal.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported 55 Palestinians have been killed and 221 injured by Israeli forces in the West Bank in 2021.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas will pay a visit to Turkey, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry. Bilateral relations, Turkey-EU relations and regional issues, particularly developments in Afghanistan, are expected to be discussed.

Britain’s military presence in Afghanistan came to an end after 20 years as the remaining UK troops have left, the British defense chief Ben Wallace said late Saturday.

Ali Shamkhani, the head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, accused Biden of illegally threatening his country, adding that if Washington resorts to “other options,” Iran is ready to respond in kind.

Iran's currency plunged to a new low amid growing economic uncertainty, rising inflation and conflict in neighboring Afghanistan. Foreign currencies rallied against the fledgling rial with the value of the dollar crossing the critical 280,000 mark and reaching 283,000 in Tehran's open market.

At least 19 civilians were killed by suspected Ugandan rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces in the Beni region of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Taliban asked female public health care workers to resume their duties nearly two weeks after taking power in Kabul.
