Daily briefing on novel coronavirus pandemic worldwide, Turkey, other developments

ANKARA (AA) - Anadolu Agency is here with a rundown of the latest developments on the coronavirus pandemic and other news in Turkey and around the world.

- Coronavirus and other developments in Turkey

Turkey administered more than 1.5 million coronavirus vaccine shots in the last 24 hours, according to official figures.

More than 40.21 million doses have been administered since the country launched a mass vaccination campaign in January.

An excess of 25.93 million people have received their first doses, while over 14.27 million have been fully vaccinated, a count by the Health Ministry showed.

It also confirmed 5,575 new infections in the last 24 hours, including 497 symptomatic patients. The number of new cases on Thursday was 5,904.

Turkey's overall case tally is now more than 5.35 million, while the nationwide death toll has reached 49,071 with 59 new fatalities.

As many as 4,427 more patients won the battle against the virus, raising the number of recoveries past 5.22 million.

Turkey's president said the international community "failed to give a good test" in managing the coronavirus pandemic.

The success of German-Turkish scientists who produced the BioNTech/Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine should stand as a lesson against xenophobic trends, said Turkey's foreign minister.

Turkey will not sacrifice its children to the PKK/YPG terror organization, according to the nation’s presidential communications director.

Politicians, diplomats, opinion makers and academics from around the world gathered in Turkey to discuss global issues at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.

The forum began with a speech by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after an introductory speech from Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Turkey's first locally produced maritime missile successfully hit its target in its final test firing, Erdogan said.


- Other global developments

Iran's presidential election has seen thin participation from voters in the early hours, but nearly all top conservative and reformist figures have cast ballots.

Several Somali soldiers were killed while others were wounded when a suicide car bomb targeted an army base in the southern province of Middle Shabelle.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was appointed to a second term by the General Assembly.

Azerbaijan put on the international wanted list the heads of Armenian companies for illegally transporting weapons to Karabakh during the past 20 years, Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General's Office said.

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro declared his government is seeking to negotiate with the US President Joe Biden administration the easing of diplomatic and trade tensions.
