Daily briefing on novel coronavirus pandemic worldwide, Turkey, other developments

ANKARA (AA) - Anadolu Agency is here with a rundown of the latest developments on the coronavirus pandemic and other news in Turkey and around the world.

- Coronavirus and other developments in Turkey

Turkey registered 2,017 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the overall tally to 361,801, according to the Health Ministry.

Some 1,297 patients recovered over the past day, raising the count to 314,390, while the death toll rose by 72 to 9,799.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hit back Sunday at Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders over an insulting cartoon he shared.

"Fascism is not in our book, it's in your book. Social justice is in our book," Erdogan said, calling Wilders a "fascist."

Turkish officials also harshly criticized the rising Islamophobia in Europe in response to Wilders tweeting an insulting cartoon of Erdogan.

Turkey has issued another navigational telex, or Navtex, for the area in the Eastern Mediterranean where it will conduct seismic research activities until Nov. 4.

The mission, which will be carried out by the Oruc Reis seismic research vessel, will continue for 10 days starting Sunday.

- COVID-19 updates worldwide

The global tally of coronavirus infections neared 43 million, according to US-based Johns Hopkins University.

On Sunday, Italy reported 21,273 more coronavirus cases, a new record single-day increase, with the total number of confirmed infections reaching 525,782. The country also reported 128 new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 37,338.

France reported 52,010 new coronavirus cases, a shocking rise over Saturday's 45,422 infections.

The number of Russians exposed to the novel coronavirus passed 1.5 million.

Over the last 24 hours, 16,710 new COVID-19 infections were registered, taking the total number of active cases to 349,305, the country's virus task force said in its daily report.

Meanwhile, India's novel coronavirus case count exceeded 7.8 million after it registered 50,129 infections over the past day.

At least 578 more fatalities were confirmed over the last 24 hours -- the lowest in over two months -- bringing the death toll in the country to 118,534.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said he tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

- Upper Karabakh conflict

Azerbaijan's military continues to maintain its dominance over Armenian forces, the country's Defense Ministry said Sunday.

Baku has liberated the city center of Qubadli and some villages from Armenian occupation, Azerbaijan's president said.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have agreed on a humanitarian cease-fire starting Monday morning, the US State Department announced Sunday.

The cease-fire will take effect at 08:00 a.m. local time (1600GMT) on Oct. 26, the US, Azerbaijan and Armenia said in a joint statement.
