Daily briefing on novel coronavirus pandemic worldwide, Turkey, other developments

ANKARA (AA) – Anadolu Agency is here with a rundown of the latest developments on the coronavirus pandemic and other news in Turkey and around the world.

- Coronavirus and other developments in Turkey

A total of 1,743 new coronavirus cases and 1,202 recoveries were reported in Turkey.

The country's overall case count now stands at 304,610 with 268,435 recoveries, according to data from the Health Ministry.

Another 112,942 coronavirus tests were conducted over the past 24 hours, pushing the total past 9.38 million.

The death toll from the outbreak in Turkey rose to 7,574 with 68 new fatalities.

Some students returned to their classes as schools in Turkey partially reopened amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan lodged a criminal complaint against four senior officials of a Greek newspaper over a despicable headline about him.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake that struck Turkey's central Nigde province damaged some 143 homes, according to officials.

- COVID-19 updates worldwide

Nearly 600 more lives were lost to COVID-19 while close to 20,000 new infections were confirmed in Brazil and Mexico in the last 24 hours, health authorities said.

Spain’s Health Ministry reported a total of almost 670,500 coronavirus infections – a jump of more than 31,400 since data was last reported Friday.

Greece reported 453 new coronavirus cases, the highest single-day rise since the end of its lockdown in May.

Coronavirus cases in Africa rose to 1,407,680 Monday, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said in a daily update.

Nigeria reported 97 new cases of the novel coronavirus, local authorities said, bringing the nationwide tally to 57,242.

Local health authorities in Libya and Tunisia confirmed additional fatalities from the coronavirus outbreak.

Palestine confirmed 611 new cases of the novel coronavirus and nine fatalities over the past 24 hours.

The Gulf states of Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar registered fresh deaths from the coronavirus pandemic.

Saudi Arabia reported more than 490 new coronavirus cases, according to the Health Ministry.

Iraq confirmed 70 new fatalities from the novel coronavirus Monday, bringing its death toll to 8,625.

- Other global developments

Ang Rita Sherpa, a legendary climber who holds the record for the highest number of summits on Everest without supplemental oxygen, died Monday. He was 72.

Russia launched a military drill involving almost 80,000 servicemen.

An Azerbaijani soldier was martyred in a cross-border attack by Armenian forces, local authorities announced.

The US announced that it is sanctioning a wide swathe of Iran's defense industry, including its ministry, in a bid to prevent the country from trading in arms ahead of the looming expiration of a UN embargo.
