ANKARA (AA) – Anadolu Agency is here with a rundown of the latest developments on the coronavirus pandemic and other news in Turkey and around the world.
- Coronavirus and other developments in Turkey
Turkey on Thursday reported 1,721 new coronavirus cases and 1,241 recoveries over the past 24 hours. The country's overall case count now stands at 309,790 with 271,964 recoveries, according to Health Ministry data.
A total of 113,317 more coronavirus tests were conducted over the past 24 hours, bringing the tally to over 9.72 million. The death toll from the virus in Turkey reached 7,785 with 74 new fatalities.
On the Eastern Mediterranean issue, Turkey urged all institutions, especially the EU, to respect its principled stance as well as the rights and interests of Turkish Cypriots.
The Turkish Coast Guard rescued 10 asylum seekers off the Aegean coast.
- Major COVID-19 developments worldwide
The UK reported 6,634 new cases of the novel coronavirus countrywide over the past 24 hours, the highest daily total ever recorded. The country also recorded 40 casualties due to the virus.
France reported a record increase in novel coronavirus cases with 16,096 infections in the past 24 hours.
There were 52 new fatalities, with the death toll currently at 31,511.
Worldwide, the death toll from COVID-19 stands at more than 981,000 in 188 countries, while the number of infections is just over 32 million and recoveries exceed 22 million, according to the latest figures from US-based Johns Hopkins University.
- Other developments
The US announced that it will provide more than $720 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Syria.
That includes more than $419 million from the US Agency for International Development’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance and more than $301 million from the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.
Libya's Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj called on warlord Khalifa Haftar's supporters in the UN Security Council to reconsider their positions on the conflict in the North African country.
Longtime Palestinian rival groups Fatah and Hamas agreed during talks in Turkey to hold elections "soon.”
German football powerhouse Bayern Munich lifted the 2020 UEFA Super Cup with a 2-1 victory against Spain's Sevilla.
