Anadolu Agency’s war journalism program continues

12-day program trains correspondents on how to survive extreme conditions

By Meryem Goktas

ANKARA (AA) - Anadolu Agency's 14th war journalism training program continued on Monday under the supervision of the agency’s news academy.

The 12-day program began on April 22 and will continue until May 3.

Participants -- including the agency’s correspondents from different regions and three journalists from Syria -- are being trained by Turkey’s military, police force, emergency services and public institutions based in Ankara.

The correspondents continued their training at the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and have even experienced grenade smoke and tear gas during the training sessions at the Police Academy.

Mustafa Ciftci, Anadolu Agency’s Antalya correspondent who is attending the training, said that the training is "essential" for those working in war zones.

"The war journalism training is very necessary in our profession, we learn how to act in the field and receive useful theoretical and practical lessons to survive under difficult conditions," he said.

Attending the training from Syria, Homam Daas said that the program is difficult but "very productive".

Noting that he lives and works under difficult conditions in Syria, Daas said he will make use of the training in the future.

Subjects such as first aid, survival during chemical and biological attacks, water survival techniques and advanced driving techniques -- were also taught in the first seven days of the ongoing program.

The 12-day program differs from other training programs in terms of duration, theoretical and practical course hours.

The successful participants will be awarded with internationally recognized certificates.
