Argentine opposition demonstrate against ‘populist policies’

Protests coincide with nation’s Independence Day

By Muhammed Emin Canik

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AA) - The opposition in Argentina took to the streets Friday, coinciding with Independence Day, to protest "populist policies" imposed by the government of President Alberto Fernandez.

The largest demonstration took place in San Nicolas, 240 kilometers (149 miles) north of Buenos Aires, according to the Buenos Aires Times.

San Nicolas is at the core of a region that produces soy, corn, and sunflower for the country’s multimillion-dollar food export market.

Farmers and opposition sympathizers demanded respect for private property and an end to state interventionism which they claim threatens employment, regional economies and the country’s development.

Midterm elections are set for Nov. 14, with primary elections scheduled Sept. 12.
