Army chief says won’t accept deal undermining Sudan’s stability

Last week, Sudan’s rivals signed framework agreement meant to resolve months-long crisis

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – Sudan’s army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said Wednesday that the military will not accept any political deal that could undermine the country’s constants.

Last week, the military and political forces signed a framework agreement meant to resolve Sudan’s months-long crisis.

The deal pledges a 2-year transition period and the appointment of a civilian prime minister by the political parties that signed the framework agreement.

“The framework agreement serves the interests of all Sudanese without exclusion,” al-Burhan said in a speech to army soldiers.

“No party should try to hijack this agreement for its own interest,” he warned.

The army chief said the framework agreement aims to help resolve some current political complexities.

“The Armed Forces will not accept any final political agreement that could undermine Sudan’s constants,” al-Burhan stressed.

Sudan has been without a functioning government since October 2021 when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government and declared a state of emergency, a move decried by political forces as a "military coup."
