Arrested ex-member of Polish military intel had access to top-secret materials

Russian spy arrested this March had access to sensitive materials, embarrassing current, former governing politicians

WARSAW (AA) - A former member of Poland's military intelligence agency who was arrested this March on charges of spying for Russia had access to all materials collected by the agency, according to various sources.

Piotr Swierczek, a journalist who authored a book on the matter, told private broadcaster TVN that "Tomasz L." had access to all material collected by the Polish Military Information Services (WSI) while he worked there in 2005-2007, during the first term of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party.

An employee of the WSI in Warsaw in 2006, Tomasz L. was a member of the committee for liquidation at the WSI.

"We have the relevant documents, including the composition of the commission in which he worked, and orders with his tasks, which indisputably confirm the involvement of Tomasz L. in the process of liquidation of the WSI," Swierczek said.

Former Defense Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, now a leading member of the opposition, was responsible for appointments to the WSI liquidation commission, Sikorski told the daily Gazeta Wyborcza on Thursday. However, he denied having any influence on the appointment of posts, as then-Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski had appointed Antoni Macierewicz for that role.

"Antoni Macierewicz was supposed to deal with the case of the Military Information Services from the beginning to the end. It was Jaroslaw Kaczynski's decision," Sikorski said.

In the interview Sikorski said he never agreed to Macierewicz being appointed to deal with recruitment. Sikorski was the Minister of National Defense in 2005-2007, first in the government of Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, then in the government of Kaczynski. He resigned in February 2007.
