Attack on convoy in eastern Burkina Faso leaves 6 dead

Gendarmes were escorting fuel tankers travelling from Boungou gold mine

KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) – Unidentified armed men killed six gendarmes and wounded seven others in an attack on a convoy of vehicles returning from a gold mine in eastern Burkina Faso, authorities said Monday.

The convoy of empty fuel trucks the gendarmes were protecting was ambushed early Sunday afternoon on a stretch of road between Sakoani and Matiacoali, Burkina Faso's gendarmerie said in a statement.

While no group has claimed responsibility, elements linked to the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group operate in the region and frequently carry out similar attacks.

“The ambush began with the detonation of an improvised explosive device as the convoy passed, followed by heavy gunfire,” it said.

The tankers were travelling from the Boungou mine, owned by Toronto-listed Endeavour Mining.

In 2019, an attack on a convoy carrying employees from the same mine left nearly 40 people dead, forcing a shutdown for almost a year.

The West African country has been marred by repeated terrorist attacks which have claimed many lives over the past five years and displaced thousands of people, especially in its north and east.

Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali in the Sahel region are at the epicenter of one of the world's fastest-growing displacement and protection crises.
