AU gives Sudan rulers 3 months to hand over power
African Union extends a 15-day deadline for Sudan's military council to hand over power to civilians
CAIRO (AA) - An African summit held in Egypt on Tuesday agreed to give Sudan’s ruling military council a three-month period to hand over power to a civilian government.
“The Cairo summit succeeded in extending the African Union (AU)’s deadline for power handover from 15 days to three months,” Bassam Rady, a spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency, said.
He said leaders attending the Cairo summit agreed that the 15-day deadline for Sudan’s ruling military council to hand over power to a civilian government was insufficient.
Egypt is the current chair of the African Union.
On April 11, the Sudanese army announced the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir, who had ruled the country since 1989, following months of protests against his rule.
On April 15, the AU’s Peace and Security Council gave a 15-day deadline for Sudan’s military rulers to hand over power to a civilian government or to be suspended from the grouping.
