Australia's Victoria state hit by flash floods

New South Wales authorities also issues warnings of heavy rain and flooding from Friday, with major dams 'highly likely' to overflow

ANKARA (AA) - The southeastern Australian state of Victoria was hit by flash floods on Friday, causing damage to properties in some areas.

The flood waters swamped cars and left people in need of rescue, ABC News reported.

The state emergency authorities have also warned locals to remain vigilant as heavy rain continues, potentially causing more flash flooding.

"Moderate Flood Warning for The Murray River downstream of Hume Dam to Tocumwal. You should prepare for flooding now," said the emergency information and warnings.

Meanwhile, Mickleham Road in Melbourne's north was closed after reports of a private dam threatening to collapse and flood nearby homes in the Craigieburn area, according to the broadcaster.

Buildings in Heidelberg, in Melbourne's northeast, were also damaged by the heavy rain and storm.

The New South Wales authorities also issued warnings of heavy rain and flooding from Friday, with major dams "highly likely" to overflow.

"Based on the Bureau of Meteorology's forecast as it stands, these dams have a high likelihood of spilling to some extent," Tony Webber told reporters.

Thousands of people were displaced from their homes in July as a result of heavy rain and flooding in the New South Wales state.

In March, at least 12 people were killed and hundreds of properties were damaged due to heavy flooding.
