LONDON (AA) - Two people have been killed and two others injured after an avalanche on the U.K.’s highest mountain Ben Nevis, local police said Tuesday.
"Police were informed that the avalanche had occurred in Number 5 Gully area at around 11:50 a.m.," said a statement from Police Scotland.
"We can sadly confirm that two people have died and two people have been injured,” it added, confirming that volunteers were still at the scene.
The Scottish Avalanche Information Service issued a warning for the rest of the day, saying an avalanche hazard would remain high.
"This is absolutely tragic news," Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister wrote on Twitter.
“My thoughts are very much with the bereaved and injured. And my gratitude as always for the work of our emergency services, mountain rescue and coastguard,” she said.
