DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) – Bangladesh on Friday reported 13 new fatalities to record the lowest single-day death toll from COVID-19 in two months.

It was the second time the overcrowded South Asian country recorded the lowest daily death toll in the past eight months as it registered 11 fatalities in a single day in May.

The nationwide death toll is above 7,800, according to latest government data.

The delta nation of 165 million people has examined more than 3.4 million samples thus far and almost 526,500 of them have turned out to be positive for the virus.

On average, the infection rate is 15.3% and more than 471,000 people have recovered from the disease, pushing the average recovery rate to 13.7%.

To halt the spread of the virus all educational institutions across the country have been closed since March 17 last year though other activities have resumed after a two-month massive lockdown.

However, the recovery rate has dramatically jumped high in the last couple of days though the country is passing through the second wave of the outbreak due to its winter season.

According to latest data, the recovery rate in the last 24 hours stands at a record 94.22% and infection at 5.8%.

The severe acute respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus was first reported in Bangladesh on March 8 and the first death on March 18 last year. The virus originated in China in December 2019.
