DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) - Bangladesh reported 112 new cases of the novel coronavirus Thursday -- a single-day record that brought the country’s total number of infections to 330.

The country recorded its first case on March 8.

Meanwhile, a top businessman died from the coronavirus late Thursday at a hospital in the capital Dhaka, the president of the country’s leading business association confirmed.

“We are deeply grieved at the sad demise of Mr. Mohammad Taslim Akhter, chairman of Prince Garments (Pvt). Ltd. He died of COVID-19 today at the Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Hospital at 3:30 p.m. [0930GMT]. Please pray for the salvation of the departed soul,” Rubana Huq, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said in a statement.

A senior reporter at Bangladesh’s popular private television station Jamuna TV also tested positive for the coronavirus, prompting its owners to put 34 of his colleagues into home quarantine.

On April 3, a cameraman at another private television channel, Independent TV, tested positive.

Following these developments, tensions have risen among local journalists, especially those still working as field reporters.

“We are very concerned about our safety. Still we have to go out for official assignments three days weekly,” Mohammad Rakib, a senior reporter at private station Somoy TV, told Anadolu Agency.

In addition, Prof. Dr. Shahidullah Sikder of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), the country’s main public medical university, has tested positive for the coronavirus.

“Shahidullah, chairman of the department of dermatology and venereology and pro vice chancellor (research and development) of BSMMU, tested positive on Thursday,” local media reported, citing BSMMU Vice Chancellor Kanak Kanti Barua.

According to official government records, a total of 21 Bangladeshi nationals have died from the novel coronavirus while more than 50 have died across the country while exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.

Since appearing in Wuhan, China last December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 184 countries and regions, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University in the U.S.

More than 1.6 million cases have been reported worldwide, with the death toll over 95,000 and more than 355,000 recoveries.
