Biden hosts reception for women at White House

'This is a time for celebrating extraordinary women who have made their mark in history,' says US president

WASHINGTON (AA) - US President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden hosted a reception Wednesday at the White House in celebration of Women's History Month to honor the achievements and contributions of women throughout history.

The reception saw the attendance of many prominent women in the country, including Congresswomen and Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House of Representatives.

Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff also attended the reception.

“This is a time for celebrating extraordinary women who have made their mark in history,” Biden said during the reception.

He said his administration has a record number of women serving, praising Harris’ efforts and also thanking Pelosi, saying she was the “greatest” speaker the House ever had.

He later called on Congress to pass the bipartisan Equality Act.

Biden stressed that they stand with the women of Iran and Afghanistan, who are facing violence with their basic human rights being trampled.
