Biden, Trudeau discuss Haiti, irregular migration at summit in Mexico

Leaders in Mexico City for trilateral summit with Mexican president to also discuss trade, climate change

NEW YORK (AA) - US President Joe Biden met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday in Mexico City ahead of a trilateral summit with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Biden and Trudeau discussed joint efforts to address violence and instability in Haiti, the recent unrest in Brazil, irregular migration and forced displacement throughout the region, the White House said in a statement.

Haiti has faced political tumult and rampant gang violence in recent years.

The two leaders committed to continue coordination with partners on the UN Security Council on the next steps to support stability in Haiti, including support to that country’s national police.

Biden and Trudeau discussed continued collaboration on migration issues, particularly in expanding legal pathways and increasing refugee resettlement.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to support Ukrainians against Russia's ''brutal aggression,'' said the White House.
