Biden’s win ‘positive’ for democracy: Ghannouchi

TUNIS, Tunisia (AA) – Democrat candidate Joe Biden’s win of US election is a “positive message” to democracy in the world, Tunisia’s Parliament Speaker Rachid Ghannouchi said on Monday.

“US support for Tunisia is a state policy, not a partisan policy. The US supports democratic transition,” Ghannouchi said in an interview with the state television on Sunday.

Ghannouchi said Tunisia has gained a strategic position after its engagement in the Libyan crisis. "There is a race for Libya, not by tanks but by companies, where Tunisia will be a starting point for these companies to rebuild Libya and this serves Tunisia’s interest,” he said.

The Tunisian speaker continued, “the presence of Democrats [in power] is obviously better and will enhance this [crisis-solving] approach" towards Libya.

US media platforms projected Biden to become the new US president after defeating outgoing President Donald Trump, who claimed fraud in the polls.

Meanwhile, Ghannouchi, who is also the head of Tunisia's Islamist Ennahdha Party, said he will neither run for his party's chairmanship nor for the country's presidency.

"I didn't nominate myself and don't have the intention to nominate myself for the party's presidency or to any presidency," in reference to the Tunisia's presidency.
