Bolivia's Morales hits 1 million Twitter followers

'Together we have made this social network a space for reflection, and for the defense of life,' says former Bolivia leader

ANKARA (AA) - Bolivia's deposed leader Evo Morales on Monday hailed reaching 1 million followers on the micro-blogging site Twitter and thanked his supporters.

"We are a million on Twitter! Together we have made this social network a space for reflection, and for the defense of life, justice and the dignity of our peoples. Thank you very much sisters and brothers," Morales tweeted.

The Bolivian leader resigned Nov. 10 under military pressure and fled the country, first to Mexico and then Argentina, where he has been staying as a political refugee since Dec. 12.

Despite his resignation, which aimed to prevent bloodshed, Bolivian security forces killed 35 pro-Morales protesters and injured many others.

Turmoil in Bolivia began when Morales won a fourth term in office -- which was beyond the legitimate limit -- in October and faced immediate resistance from opposition parties that challenged the presidential election results. Protesters took to the streets claiming the ballot was rigged.

As well, the first indigenous president's new term was immediately hampered by fraud accusations by the Organization of American States (OAS). The regional bloc is often accused of being a Washington puppet and mouthpiece for U.S. policies.

After weeks of upheaval, Morales resigned under pressure from the military and moved to Mexico. Meanwhile, conservative Senator Anez proclaimed herself interim president.

Since his ouster, Morales has been using Twitter extensively to motivate his electorate base and mobilize his socialist party MAS for the upcoming elections in May.

Morales acquired hundreds of thousands of new followers on social media platforms in a short period of time.

Bolivia, a central South American country with a rich terrain spanning Andes Mountains, the Atacama Desert and Amazon Basin rainforest, has a population of around 11 million people and boasts nearly 70% of the world's lithium reserves, which is a critical component of electric cars in particular.

Morales has for weeks claimed that his ouster is a "lithium coup," accusing Western countries and especially the U.S. of targeting the Andean nation's natural resources.
