Brazil dethrone Belgium to top FIFA rankings

Brazilian national team collect 1,832.69 points, followed by Belgium with 1,827, France have 1,789.85

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Brazilian national football team is ranked first in the newly unveiled FIFA world rankings on Thursday.

The five-time World Cup champions ended the reign of Belgium which had been at the top of the list since Oct. 25, 2018.

Brazil have 1,832.69 points. The South American powerhouse are five points ahead of second-place Belgium.

The 2018 World Cup bronze medalists have 1,827 points.

Defending World Cup champions, France, are currently in the third spot.

Les Bleus are trailing 37.15 points behind the Belgian national team.

Argentina, one of only three non-European nations in the top 10, remained in fourth place. The Albiceleste were followed by England, Italy and Spain.

The other non-European team, Mexico, made a notable move up, rising three spots to ninth place. Having racked up 1,658 points, the Netherlands and Mexico tied in the March rankings.

Despite failing to advance to the World Cup in Qatar, Italy remained in the top 10. The Azzurri, who are UEFA EURO 2020 champions, placed sixth.

One of the eminent football nations, Portugal, collected 1,674 points to come eighth in the world.

The Turkish national team, who recently failed to qualify for the World Cup, are down to 43rd place from 39th with 1,461 points.

The next FIFA World Ranking will be announced June 23.
