Brazil, Peru report new coronavirus-related death toll

Brazil confirms 133 deaths, Peru 14, in last 24 hours due to COVID-19 pandemic

BUENOS AIRES/ANKARA (AA) - Brazilian health officials on Thursday confirmed 133 deaths due to the novel coronavirus, in the last 24 hours while Peru reported an additional 14.

In Brazil, the additional deaths brought the total in the country to 121, while the number of infections rose to 15,927, and 667 people recovered.

The 210 million-strong nation is one of the worst-hit countries in Latin America by the virus and was the first to report a COVID-19-related fatality.

In Peru, the Health Ministry reported that the number of virus cases has risen to 4,342, with a death toll of 121.

Meanwhile, President Martin Vizcarra announced on Twitter that the country's state of emergency and quarantine measures had been extended until April 26.

Last week, Vizcarra announced new restrictions to tackle the coronavirus by reducing the number of people on the streets. According to the restrictions, women can leave their homes on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and men on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. No one can leave their homes on Sunday.

Since the virus emerged last December in the Chinese city of Wuhan, it has spread to at least 184 countries and regions.

There are more than 1.48 million confirmed infections worldwide and more than 88,500 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins. Nearly 330,000 have recovered.
