Brazil's president considers appointing son as US envoy

Eduardo Bolsonaro says he would accept any mission offered by his father, adding that no formal requests been made yet

ANKARA (AA) - Brazil's president said he is considering appointing his son ambassador to the U.S., in line with Brasilia’s stronger ties with Washington under his presidency.

Far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro told reporters that his son Eduardo could be "a suitable" person and is "perfectly qualified" to serve in Washington, reported Spanish daily El Periodico on Friday.

Eduardo Bolsonaro also said that he would accept "any mission" offered by his father, adding that no formal requests have yet been made for him to take the helm of the embassy in Washington.

Bolsonaro, who is following in his father’s ideological footsteps and is an informal foreign policy advisor to the president, would have to resign from the Chamber of Deputies if he accepts the position.

In elections last October, Bolsonaro won his deputy’s seat by a historic margin.

Jair Bolsonaro, who has a military background and is known for his pro-U.S. policies, won last year’s presidential elections on the back of his get-tough rhetoric on corruption and crime.

Bolsonaro has also supported the opposition in neighboring Venezuela, in sync with U.S. policy
