British PM warns Scotland not to 'undermine' Brexit

Theresa May meets leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to discuss Brexit negotiations

LONDON (AA) – U.K. Prime Minister has warned the Scottish first minister Monday against “undermining” the country’s Brexit negotiations.

Theresa May met Scotland’s Nicola Sturgeon, Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones and Arlene Foster of Northern Ireland in an effort to discuss the Brexit negotiations and the U.K.’s position.

"We expect representatives of the devolved administrations to act in that way and to in no way undermine the UK's position." a spokesperson for the British prime minister said to reporters while the leaders met behind closed doors.

"The country is facing a negotiation of tremendous importance and it is imperative that the devolved administrations play their part in making it work,” said the prime minister.

After a two-hour-long meeting, Sturgeon told SkyNews the meeting was “deeply frustrating” and emphasized her disappointment with the U.K.'s position.

“I don't know any more now about the UK Government's approach to the negotiations than before I went into the meeting,” she said in a statement.

Scotland and Northern Ireland both backed EU membership in the referendum but were outvoted by Wales and England.

The Scottish first minister has threatened to hold a second independence referendum since the vote to leave the EU in June.
