NEW DELHI (AA) – At least 22 people were killed Monday morning in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh when a bus caught fire following a head-on collision with a truck, police officials confirmed.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the charred bodies are beyond recognition, said Jogendera Kumar, a senior police officer.

“We have yet to find the exact cause of the accident,” he added.

The bus carrying passengers from the capital New Delhi to the town of Gonda had the accident on the National Highway in the Bareilly district.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced compensation of $3,100 for the deceased, and $800 for the injured.
