Cambodia ruling party claims victory in local elections

Spokesman says Cambodian People's Party is leading in majority of seats across country

ANKARA (AA) - The ruling party in Cambodia on Monday claimed that it won a landslide victory in the Southeast Asian nation's local elections, local media reported.

The Cambodian People's Party is leading and winning a majority of seats across the country, party spokesman Sok Eysan was quoted as saying by the local daily Khmer Times.

"According our estimate, candidates from Cambodian People’s Party will be elected to be the commune chiefs in at least 99% of the 1,652 communes contested for in yesterday's election," Eysan said.

He added that the opposition would get seats in "10 communes or so."

According to the country's election commission, nearly 80% turnout was recorded in the local elections on Sunday, when people voted to elect 11,622 councilors and chiefs.

The commission said in a press conference that though vote counting continues and initial results have yet to be released, the Cambodian People's Party is in the lead.
