BENGHAZI, Libya (AA) - The head of eastern Libya’s largest tribe was killed on Friday when a car bomb exploded outside a mosque on the outskirts of Benghazi, according to a Libyan security official.
“Sheikh Abrik al-Luwati, the head of the Al-Awaqir tribe, was killed by a car bomb after leaving the Bilal bin Rabah Mosque in Benghazi’s Sallouq district,” the official, preferring not to be named for security reasons, told Anadolu Agency.
“The bombing also killed al-Luwati’s son and another man,” the same source added without identifying the latter.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.
On March 10, a similar car bombing in Benghazi targeted a military convoy, killing two Libyan soldiers.
