Car bomb rocks Syria’s Azaz, killing ten: Local sources

Attack reportedly targeted ammo depot belonging to prominent armed opposition group

AZAZ, Syria (AA) – Ten people were killed Thursday when a car bomb rocked the city of Azaz in Syria’s northwestern Aleppo province near the border with Turkey, according to local sources.

The sources, who spoke to Anadolu Agency anonymously due to security concerns, said the bomb-laden vehicle was detonated near an ammunition depot belonging to the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement, an armed faction opposed to Syria’s Assad regime that fights under the umbrella of the Free Syria Army.

Several people were seriously injured by the blast, including four who were later taken to hospitals in neighboring Turkey via the Oncupinar border crossing.

Syria has been locked in a devastating civil war since early 2011, when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests -- which erupted as part of the "Arab Spring" uprisings -- with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of people are believed to have been killed and millions more displaced by the conflict.
