ISTANBUL (AA) - Tennis player Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner on Thursday in the second-longest match in US Open history to qualify for the semifinals.

The 19-year-old Alcaraz eliminated World No.11 Sinner with the sets 6-3, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, and 6-3 after five hours and 15 minutes at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"Honestly, I still don't know how I did it. You have to believe in yourself. I believed in my game," Alcarez said on the court after the game.

"It was really difficult to close out the match. I tried to stay calm, but it is difficult in the moment," he added.

The Spaniard's win was the second-longest clash in the history of the tournament after Stefan Edberg's five-hour, 26-minute semifinal victory against Michael Chang 30 years ago.

Alcaraz will face Frances Tiafoe in the next round.

In the women's singles, top-ranked Iga Swiatek moved to her first US Open semifinals after claiming a straight-sets victory over No.8 seed Jessica Pegula.

Poland's Swiatek will take on Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals.
