China, Cambodia sign free trade agreement

China also agrees to provide $140M grant to push Cambodia’s top priority projects in 2020, says local media

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AA) - Cambodia on Monday signed a landmark free trade agreement with China, along with other important bilateral documents in Phnom Penh, local media outlets reported.

According to Phnom Penh-based Fresh News, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi presided over the signing ceremony of Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) at the Peace Palace.

They also signed an agreement under which China will grant an aid of $149 million to be used by Cambodia to build top priority projects in 2020.

Other documents included conducting a feasibility study to improve Sihanoukville Provincial Referral Hospital and developing municipal sewerage system in the port city of Sihanoukville.

Chinese foreign minister had arrived in Phnom Penh on Sunday for a two-day official visit.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying had announced on Friday that Wang will also visit Malaysia, Laos, and Thailand, and will pay a transit visit to Singapore on Thursday, the daily said.

According to the report, Wang’s visit to Cambodia during COVID-19 pandemic was aimed at further strengthening relations and develop fruitful cooperation between the two countries.
