China denies its spy arrested in US

Washington's deliberate attempts to smear Chinese consular offices, personnel will not succeed, says Foreign Ministry

ANKARA (AA) - China on Tuesday described US claims of arresting a Chinese spy as "pure fabrication," state-run media said.

Wang Wenbin, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said the allegations are Washington's deliberate attempts to smear Chinese consular offices and personnel, according to Global Times.

"The so-called criminal complaint is full of uncertainty with words like 'seeming' and 'possible'. It is blatant framing," Wang added at a media briefing.

On Monday, US media reported that an ethnic Tibetan police officer was arrested on spying charges for the Chinese consulate in New York.

Federal prosecutors charged Baimadajie Angwang, 33, a New York City police officer, with acting as an illegal agent of the Chinese government, accusing him of providing intelligence about Tibetans living in the United States to officials at the Chinese consulate, New York Times reported.

Earlier, the Chinese Consulate General in New York also rejected the allegations and said their consulate personnel always fulfilled their duties in accordance with international law and laws of the US.

"They have been conducting normal exchanges with various sections of society in its consular district, and have been committed to promoting friendly communication and exchanges between the Chinese people and people from all walks of life in its consular district," a Chinese spokesman said.
