China takes US tariffs case to WTO

Beijing files case in World Trade Organization opposing additional tariffs by Washington on its goods

By Riyaz ul Khaliq

ANKARA (AA) - China has approached the world's top trade watchdog to solve its tariff issues with the United States, lodging Monday a complaint with the World Trade Organization after the Trump administration levied an extra 15% tariff on Chinese goods.

"The tariffs imposed by the United States severely violated the consensus reached by the two heads of state in Osaka," China's state-run Xinhua news quoted a statement by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

U.S. President Donald Trump had held a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on the sidelines of G20 Summit in Osaka Japan last June.

The Chinese move came after the U.S. imposed an additional 15% tariffs on $300 billion worth of Chinese imports from Sept. 1.

"China is extremely dissatisfied with and resolutely opposes the tariffs," the ministry added.

It said that China will "firmly safeguard its own legitimate rights and interests and resolutely uphold the multilateral trading system as well as the international trade order in line with WTO rules."
